Hello, all!
Last week I had the honor of attending A Celebration of Eastman in Houston with Eastman’s wonderful leadership faculty, alumni, and supporters. Eastman Dean Jamal Rossi presented Todd Frazier with the 2016 Luminary Award in recognition of Frazier’s incredible contributions to the arts. Students, you’ll know Todd Frazier as the founder of the American Festival for the Arts here in Houston! He is currently the Director of the Center for Performing Arts Medicine at Houston Methodist Hospital.
I was so happy to see Donna Brink Fox at the reception and to have the chance to thank her for her profound influence on my musical life. To students, Dr. Fox champions academic achievement, joy, and perseverance. To teachers, she demonstrates the lifelong positive impact you have on your students and their communities.
Speaking of Eastman’s leadership, I was thrilled to connect with Jamal Rossi, Eastman’s Joan and Martin Messinger Dean. His enthusiasm for music’s ability to change the world perfectly demonstrates Eastman’s dynamic role in the 21st century.

Congratulations to LHS Collaborative Pianist Evelyn Lam for being selected as one of six 2016 Music Inspire Africa artists! Evelyn will travel to South Africa from May 23rd – June 13th to perform, present, and teach.

Congratulations to Isaac, who won his first concertmaster position at Dulles Middle School at the beginning of March. Isaac also took home a new violin recently from Amati Violin Shop.
Congratulations to Sneha, our newly crowned 1st desk, 1st violin section leader at Bowie Middle School! Sneha is Deepa’s sister, and it’s a delight to watch both girls excel musically.
Baris has finally found his dream violin bow! After playing bows throughout Houston, he purchased a bow from Gold Violin Shop.
On an academic note, let’s all congratulate Asher (7th grade, Sartartia MS) for taking the SAT and scoring better than the majority of HS seniors on both state and national levels. Keep up the good work, Asher!
Please join us in welcoming our newest studio member, Aleezay. Aleezay is in 6th grade and studies violin in Sartartia Middle School orchestra.
Congratulations to Paige, who chose a Jan Kriml violin from Gold Violin Shop and an Alfred Knoll bow from Lisle Violin Shop after winning a Grade 1 on a Level 1 piece for her high school Solo & Ensemble competition.

Hello, all!
I’m finally back from a wonderful trip abroad that ended with a lecture and performance at ACS Egham International School in Surrey, England.
I thoroughly enjoyed talking to HS International Baccalaureate students about what it takes to earn a conservatory degree in performance and what the pursuit of music teaches us about learning. It’s inspiring to see how Irina Walters’ music program at ACS has grown with spectacular guest artist and student performances.
While in London I also had the chance to meet up with Levine Andrade, my violin and viola teacher in England for the years I spent there. I was so excited to see my former teacher that I forgot to take a picture! But, needless to say, I am so grateful to both Levine and Irina for the profound impact their musical mentorship has had on my life.
The final award count for Solo & Ensemble is in and it’s wonderful to announce that 22 LHS students won Grade 1 marks, with 5 students competing in both the Solo and Ensemble categories and securing Grade 1 in both competitions. Every Solo & Ensemble contestant who performed in the 2016 LHS Student Showcase Recital on February 13th received a 1 for their solo grade. Well done, kids!
